DC Drops Road Contest to Franklin
FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Defiance College women's basketball dropped their fourth straight game this afternoon as they fell 78-60 to Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana.
Defiance was led by Shelby Stamm with a team high 22 points and seven rebounds, while Sam Ervin added eight points
In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets found themselves held scoreless, trailing 6-0 just two minutes into play. Stamm shifted into a new gear, notching three consecutive buckets including a three, helping DC equalize at 14-14, eventually taking a 21-16 advantage before heading into the second period.
Back-to-back layups from Ervin and Stamm put Defiance up by seven moments into quarter two. DC's defense muted Franklin for nearly three minutes. Ashely Lee closed the half with a trey and pair of free throws but the Grizzlies had closed the gap, trailing by only three going into the locker rooms.
Franklin was on the attack coming out of the half, putting together a 10-5 run that bolstered their lead to 48-42 and the Purple and Gold failed to find an offensive rhythm as they were outscored 24-9. With all the momentum in FC's hands, they would close the quarter up by 12.
The Yellow Jackets continued to battle in the fourth period but the Grizzlies would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest, ending the game with a 78-60 victory. DC suffered 20 turnovers in the loss while shooting 17 of 53 from the field.
Lauren Rogers grabbed a team best 12 rebounds and Schalk dished out five assists coupled with seven points.
Defiance returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 31 as they host Anderson University at the Weaner Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
