Defiance Downed In 75-47 Loss to Albion
ALBION, Mich. – The Defiance College women's basketball team's slow start resulted in a 75-47 loss against Albion College this afternoon in Albion, Michigan.
Defiance's (0-2) only lead of the game came in the first fifteen seconds as Lauren Rogers nailed a jumper to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-0. The Britons would fire back, putting together a 7-0 run on DC to take the lead 7-2 with just over half the first quarter remaining. In the waning minutes of the first period, Albion led 17-6 before Kalyn Pickens scored six of her eight points to make the score 23-12 going into the second period.
Rogers opened the second period with a three-pointer but the Britons continued to pound the Jackets, going on a 10-4 run that put them up 33-19 with 6:16 remaining. Whitney Schalk and Sam Ervin continued to battle for DC, combining for six points before a jumper from Albion with 1:03 remaining gave the Britons its largest lead of the first half, 43-26.
DC's struggles followed them into the third quarter as they would go nearly five minutes without a field goal. Finally, with 5:08 on the clock, Defiance collected six consecutive points to make the score 52-32. Albion finished off the third period outscoring the Jackets 8-2, leading 61-37.
The fourth quarter saw only ten points from the Purple and Gold, six of which coming from Ashley Lee, connecting on a pair of treys. The Britons would go on to win the contest 75-47.
As a team, DC shot 29.8% (17-for-57) from the floor and went 5-for-23 (21.7%) from behind the arc while grabbing 30 rebounds.
Defiance was led by Pickens, tallying eight points, going 3-8 from the field. Rogers and Schalk both finished with seven points apiece while Lee and Ervin netted six respectively. Ervin nabbed a team best eight rebounds on the day and Schalk dished out a team high four assists.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, November 21 as they host Ohio Northern University at the Weaner Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
