Softball Earns Split in Dramatic Fashion

CLERMONT, FLA. - The Defiance College softball team earned a split on Monday evening in dramatic fashion as they defeated Lebanon Valley 5-4 but fell in the night cap to Otterbein 4-3 in extra innings at Hancock Fields.

Senior, pitcher, Rachel Wehrman (Fort Loramie/Minster) picked up the game one victory pitching a complete game, while striking out four batters. 

Lebanon Valley dominated much of the opener as they surged ahead 4-0 scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the third inning. 

However, junior Brooke Gostomsky (Dayton/Covington) proved clutch in the bottom of the seventh inning as she hit a double down the left field line that plated three runs and tied the contest 4-4. 

The Yellow Jackets would win the game on the following at bat as freshman Kalin Hubble (Anderson, Ind.) delivered the winning hit scoring Gostomsky for the 5-4 victory.

In the night cap, DC found themselves trailing once more as the Cardinals plated two runs in the top of the first inning but again the Yellow Jackets remained poise. 

Sophomore Hali Geraci (Springboro) stepped up big for Defiance as she delivered a homerun over the left field fence scoring Hubble in the bottom of the second, 2-2. 

The Yellow Jackets would gain the lead in the third inning as senior Jordan Osborne (Delaware/Ruthford B. Hayes) hit a shot to left field that left the Cardinals rattled, 3-2.

However, Otterbein responded scoring a run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings before plating the game winning run in extras.

Defiance returns to action on Wednesday, March 6 as they take on Eastern Nazarene and Penn St.-Hazleton.
