Saturday's action was once again highlighted by an impressive performance from Madi Bowman (Eaton/Eaton). The senior set a new personal record with a 16.85-meter weight throw mark, in turn breaking her school record set earlier this season.
"Madi had a great day, and I am really happy for her," said Defiance Head Coach Nathan Christianson. "She struggled a bit in a tough ring, but kept fighting and got a major PR on her final throw."
Bowman also competed in the shot put where she picked up an eighth-place finish with a toss of 10.79 meters in the finals.
On the men's side of throwing action, Kaleb Tyree (Tiffin/Columbian) recorded a top twenty finish in a challenging field in the shot put. The senior also tallied a 23rd place result in the weight throw with a mark of 11.15 meters.
"I take my hat off to our throwing staff of Dallas Franks and Tom Postema," said Christianson. "They've been working hard with Kaleb and Madi, and the results are showing."
On the track, a strong day for Ja'qway Janvier (Miami Gardens, Fla./Mater Academy Charter) and Cody Drumm-Turner (Homer, Mich/Homer) had the Yellow Jacket duo in the 60-meter dash finals. The pair took home seventh and eighth respectively out of the field of over 35 competitors.
Janvier continued his day with a top-15 performance in the 200-meter dash, breaking the 24-second barrier with a 23.97. Drumm-Turner took on the triple jump and once again made finals. This time the … tallied an 11.78 mark for an eighth-place result.
Two new faces appeared on the women's side of the action for the Purple and Gold. Carmen Caldwell (Brownstown, Mich/Woodhaven) and Kat Wicher (Toledo/Whitmer) ventured into their first competition of the season on Saturday. The duo paired with Blake Newman (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) and Malia Ferry (Milford/Milford) in the distance medley, where they finished with a time of 17:20.73.
Also competing for DC on Saturday was Lisa Maria Markau. The sophomore featured in the 4x200 meter relay alongside Ferry, Wicher, and Newman before taking on the 200-meter dash and the long jump.
