Castillo Wins Discus to Lead Yellow Jackets

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's track and field team competed in the two-day Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University, on Friday and Saturday. The meet did not keep team scores.
Junior Javier Castillo (Nogales, Ariz) led DC with a win in the discus throw, as his toss of 42.71 meters (140 feet, 1 inch) won the competition by almost six feet! Senior Joshua Petro (Ocala, Fla./The Villages) finished in the third spot at 39.93 meters (131 feet), while freshman Matthew Downs (Rio Rico, Ariz.) placed fifth and junior Andrew Fahler (Wellington) placed eighth.
Fahler had the top hammer throw of the day on Friday, as his throw of 43.69 meters (143 feet, 4 inches) placed seventh in the field of 27 competitors.
Castillo and Petro came home with top 10 finishes in the shot put on Saturday, as well. Castillo placed third with a throw of 13.29 meters (43 feet, 7.25 inches), while Petro was seventh with a mark of 12.27 meters (40 feet, 3.25 inches). Drumm-Turner also placed 11th in his first ever attempt at the javelin with a throw of 38.74 meters (127 feet, 1 inch).
Coach Ciolek held out many of the runners due to the frigid temperatures, as freshman Cody Drumm-Turner (Homer, Mich.) was the highest placing runner with a 17th place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.53 seconds.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, Apr. 14 as they return to Ohio Wesleyan University for the Div. III All-Ohio Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
