Defiance Ends Two Match Winning Streak at Earlham
RICHMOND, IND. -- The Defiance College men's tennis team ended its two-match winning streak as they traveled to Earlham (Ind.) College for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conferende dual match, but fell to the Quakers, 8-1, in Richmond, Ind.
RICHMOND, IND. -- The Defiance College men's tennis team ended its two-match winning streak as they traveled to Earlham (Ind.) College for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conferende dual match, but fell to the Quakers, 8-1, in Richmond, Ind.
Defiance quickly fell behind 3-0 early as Earlham swept all three doubles matches. Senior James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) had the closest match of the three against their Quaker opponents narrowly dropping an 8-6 decision.
Senior Tory Savage (Bryan) and junior Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) took one game at second doubles with the outcome going in favor of Earlham, 8-1. The remaining doubles matchup involved seniors Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) and Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) at third singles which ended in an 8-0 loss.
The lone point for the Yellow Jackets in the match came at second singles that saw Swisher prevail against his opponent in straight sets winning by the scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
The remaining singles matches were won by Earlham with DeMeo coming up short, 6-3 and 6-0. Savage dropped the first set of his third singles matchup, 6-1. The second set was much closer with the Quakers hanging on for a 7-5 margin
Widman won one game in the first set at fourth singles, but was shut out in the second set, falling by the scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Kurtz also won a game which came in the second set with the overall match going in favor of Earlham by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Senior Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) rounded out the singles competition at the sixth spot and lost both sets by the score of 6-0.
Defiance will host a tri-match on Saturday, Apr. 22 against HCAC opponent Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology and non-conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University. The Jackets will take on the Fightin' Engineers at 10 a.m. and will then take on the Battling Bishops at 3 p.m.
