Yellow Jackets lose on late goal at Mount St. Joseph
The Defiance men's soccer program wrapped up the 2022 season with a 2-1 loss at Mount St. Joseph. The Yellow Jackets were not among the six teams to qualify for the HCAC Tournament, thereby ending the year 2-12-5 and 1-7-1 in conference play.

Inside the Numbers:
- Chase Stiner scored Defiance's lone goal in the 73rd minute, which tied the game 1-1. The score gives Stiner three goals in his final two games for the Yellow Jackets when combined with his two-goal Senior Day versus Franklin on Saturday. Stiner led the 2022 Yellow Jackets with six goals and 10 career goals at Defiance.
- Michael Abel scored both goals for the Lions, both in the second half. Abel is Mount St. Joseph's leading scorer with eight goals in 2022.
- Stiner and Abel led all players with four shots apiece. Will Gelhausen and Josh Maurer added three shots each for Defiance.
- Jackets keeper Austin Boles made his second start of the year and stopped five shot attempts by the Lions.
- Mount St. Joseph split keeper duties with Gustavo Gutierrez making five saves in the first half and seven saves were made by Jackson Byrd in the second.

The Difference:
- After playing to a scoreless tie through the first half, Abel found an opening for the Lions in the 60th minute for the first goal of the night.
- Stiner kicked in the equalizer for Defiance on a penalty shot at the 72:06 mark.
- Abel struck for his second goal with just under three minutes left in the match to lift the Lions for good.
- The Yellow Jackets narrowly missed on a trio of scoring opportunities. Stiner and Riley Hensley each connected with the post in the first half while Jeremy Jimenez nailed the crossbar moments into the second half.
