ANDERSON, INDIANA - The Defiance College men's soccer team traveled to Anderson University on Wednesday afternoon. The Purple and Gold found themselves in a second double overtime thriller of the season as the Yellow Jackets were victorious 2-1.
No strangers to overtime play in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, Defiance found themselves evenly matched with the Ravens. Despite a combined 21 shots in the first half, neither side was able to break through. Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusk / Upper Sandusky) earned seven saves in the first period to help keep the score knotted up on the Anderson University turf.
In the second half the deadlock was broken when the Ravens scored from a corner kick via a header. The Yellow Jackets were not going down without a fight, outshooting the Ravens 10-7 in the second period. DC's efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute when a Hunter Kauffman (St. Paris / Graham) pass found Christian Meister (Ontario / Ontario) who finished his sixth goal of the season.
The sides continued to battle until the end of regulation and found themselves headed to overtime. Defiance was able to take four shots in the first period of extra-time, but could not find the back of the net.
It did not take long into the second period of overtime for the Purple and Gold to find themselves in a familiar situation. In the 107th minute, Jarren Casto (Celina / Celina) worked a give-and-go with Adam Ordel (Lima / Elida) from outside the Raven 18-yard box. After a quick bit of footwork Casto returned Ordel's intial pass into the path of the senior who tucked home his fourth goal of the season to give Defiance a win in thrilling fashion.
The victory improves the Yellow Jacket record to 6-7 on the season with a 3-1 HCAC mark.
Defiance is next in action Saturday, Oct. 13 as they travel to Transylvania (Ky.) for a 3:30 pm kickoff against the defending conference champions.
