NEW CONCORD, OHIO - The Defiance College men's soccer team traveled to Muskingum University on Wednesday evening. Despite scoring two goals in the first half, the Yellow Jackets were unable to equalize in the second half and fell to the Muskies 3-2.
The match started with high energy as the visiting side immediately pressured the Muskies goal. Just three minutes into the contest, the Yellow Jackets struck home. After Jarren Casto (Celina / Celina) drew a foul outside the 18-yard box, Jarod Brossia (Curtice / Genoa) stepped up from 25 yards out. Brossia struck the free kick with pace, cleared the wall, and found the top corner past the outstretched Muskies keeper. With just 14:39 off the clock, the home side struck to equalize.
After a red card to Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky / Upper Sandusky) for a handball outside the box, the Yellow Jackets had their work cut out as they played down a man for the remainder of the the match. That didn't keep the Purple and Gold from continuing the offensive pressure. In the 28th minute after a corner from Brossia, the ball found its way to Bennett Pack (Glasgow, Ky. / Glasgow) on the back post who headed the shot home to give Defiance a 2-1 advantage. The hosts didn't take long to retaliate, scoring in the 31st minute to equalize. The sides took the 2-2 scoreline into halftime.
The sides continued to battle for the go-ahead goal in the second period, when the Muskies found the back of Aden Gariety's (Celina / Celina) net to secure a 3-2 lead. Despite continuous pressure from the short sided Yellow Jackets, the Muskies were able to hold on to earn the victory on their home turf.
The defeat takes the Yellow Jacket record to 1-6 on the 2018 campaign. The men's soccer side will hit the road on Saturday, September 22 as they travel to Grace Christian (Mich.) for a 3:30 pm kickoff, before returning home on September 25th to host Thiel.
