TERRE HAUTE, IND. - The Defiance College men's basketball team headed to Rose-Hulman on Saturday for an HCAC contest. The strong Fightin' Engineer side held the Yellow Jackets to under 50 points as Defiance fell 84-48.
Saturday's matchup marked the start of the second half of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season, as DC will venture through the tough field once again.
Leading the Defiance offense in scoring was freshman Tyler Andrew (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence Central) with nine points. Marell Jordan (West Lafayette, Ind. / Lafayette Jefferson) left Terre Haute with a seven point game. Jordan Maschino (Bradford / Covington) continued his success on the boards, reeling in seven rebounds.
Despite the lockdown defense displayed by Rose, DC won the turnover battle on the day, forcing 11 from the home side. Defiance marched Rose shot-for-shot from three, with each side going 6-20 (30%).
The matchup was started with a small Fightin' Engineer lead before the Yellow Jackets burst onto the scene with their own advantage. An Andrew layup followed by a Devin Goodwyn (Detroit, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) three gave DC their only lead of the game with a little over 16 minutes left in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets continued to battle Rose after home side grabbed the lead back. With just 10 minutes left in the first half Jordan pulled up from beyond the arc to bring the game back within three. A handful of Fightin' Engineer runs gave the home side the 46-24 lead as they headed into halftime.
The talented Rose defense was able to stymie the Yellow Jacket offense for much of the second half, forcing DC into a 25% (8-32) shooting mark from the field.
The Yellow Jacket record now stands at 2-15 overall, with an 0-10 HCAC mark. The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 as they travel to Manchester. DC will look to avenge a close defeat to the Spartans earlier this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
