Football Slips in Non-Conference Action at Hope College

Defiance (0-2 ovverall) finished the contest with 127-yards of total offense, including 110-yards through the air. The DC offense was led by junior, running back Corey Bennett (Tampa, Fla./Blake) with 50-yards rushing. Junior Cody Brown (Grass lake, Mich.) led the Yellow Jackets on the defensive side of the ball recording a team-high 11 tackles.
Hope scored its first touchdown of the game at the 10:45 mark of the first quarter traveling the ball 60-yards on nine plays en route to the early 7-0 advantage. The Flying Dutchmen would strike again late in the first quarter taking the ball 72-yards including an 18-yard completion to extend its lead to 14-0.
Following a Defiance three and out to open the second quarter, Hope wasted no time marching 45-yards in just under two minutes to extend their lead to 21-0. The DC offense continued to struggle late in the half as a Yellow Jacket fumble would eventually result in another Hope score. The Flying Dutchmen entered the break leading 28-0. In the first half, Hope led the offensive battle connecting for 140-yards in the air and 140-yards on the ground. Bennett led the Yellow Jackets on the ground with 18-yards, including an 11-yard scamper.
The Defiance offense came out on the attack to open the second half as Benett rushed for 18-yards, followed by a 3-yard scamper to land the Yellow Jackets inside Hope territory. However, the Hope defense held strong stalling the DC drive on the Flying Dutchmen 22-yard line. After a big stop by the Yellow Jacket defense, the DC offense put together its longest drive of the contest going 83-yards, including a 45-yard connection between Logan Mico (Grosse Point Park, Mich.) and Kendrick Harvey (Clearwater, Fla.) to close out the third quarter.
After a turnover on downs, Hope marched the length of the field going 92-yards on seven plays to score the game's final touchdown. The Flying Dutchmen tacked on a 30-yard field goal with 4:49 remaining in the contest to claim the 38-0 victory.
Hope finished the contest with 435 total yards of offense, 243-yards rushing and 192 passing yards.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, Sept. 16 as they open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Franklin. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
