DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College baseball team fell behind early to Heidelberg University and could not recover as the Student Princes handed the Yellow Jackets a 16-5 loss in non-conference action at Craig A. Rutter Field.
Defiance posted 12 hits in the game with one player recording a multi-hit game in freshman Troy Konwinski (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park) who went two-of-four with a run scored and a pair of RBI.
Heidelberg (13-18) grabbed control early scoring 10 runs in the top of the first inning. Defiance (15-14) plated two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a two-RBI double by Konwinski with runners on first and second, but the Jackets would still trail, 10-2.
The Student Princes went on to add a combined six runs with three scores in the third, one in the fifth and two in the eighth to round out the scoring. DC scored the remainder of its runs in the eighth that began with a Konwinski triple. The Jackets later got bases loaded which led to three runs on RBI-base hits by freshman Caleb Graff (Westfield, Ind./Westfield), senior Ryan Kohlhofer (Walbridge/Lake) and freshman Cody Harsman (Brookville).
But the runs would come a little too late as Heidelberg went on to win by the final of 16-5.
Defiance used seven pitchers in the game with sophomore Izzy Martinez (Defiance/Tinora) getting the start. Martinez allowed six runs on four hits and dropped to 0-2 overall for the season with the loss.
DC returns to action this weekend when the Yellow Jackets host Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference three-game series which begins on Saturday, Apr. 23. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game set to begin at noon.
