GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced on Monday that it had selected Defiance College's Jake Taylor as the league's Pitcher of the Week. The award is the first for Taylor and the third for the Yellow Jackets this season.
Taylor received the accolade after pitching in DC's wins at Ohio Northern and Mount St. Joseph and going 1-0 with a 1.12 earned-run average in the two outings. The freshman hurler allowed just five hits during his eight innings, while posting a 0.88 WHIP and holding the opposition to a .192 batting average.
Taylor opened the week by scattering four hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 12-1 victory at Ohio Northern. The St. Mary's, Ohio, native struck out a career-high four batters in the start and was credited with his second win of the season. Taylor then tossed a scoreless inning of relief on Saturday, to help preserve DC's 8-7 win at Mount St. Joseph.
Taylor and the Jackets will enter the final week of the 2010 season having doubled the program's win total from one year ago with 14 victories. DC will look to increase that win total on Tuesday, when it hosts Bluffton (15-21, 5-12 HCAC) at 4:00 pm.
