GOSHEN, Ind. – Tim Pitro stroked a first-inning single for the 151st hit of his collegiate career and became the all-time hit leader at Defiance College. The Jackets went on to secure their 11th win of the 2010 campaign with a 6-5 win at Goshen on Sunday afternoon.
Pitro went 1-4 in the victory and is now batting .333 for the season with 27 hits during his senior season. The Gahanna, Ohio, native and four-year starter boasts a .342 career batting average and with his 151st hit, passed B.J. Moss (1994-1997) for the top spot in the history of the DC baseball program.
DC would not capitalize on Pitro's record-breaking single in the top of the first however and found itself needing to rally from deficits of 2-0, 4-3 and 5-4 throughout the course of the non-conference affair.
The Jackets were up to the challenge however, as Defiance scored an unearned run in the second and saw Brent Kremer and Pitro cross the plate in the third on two more Goshen errors to take the 3-2 advantage.
GC would rally for a pair in the fifth but Alex Timofeev cleared the fences in the sixth to tie the contest at 4-4 with his second collegiate home run.
Stephen Leskow made the one-run cushion hold, as the freshman hurler entered in the bottom of the eighth and held the Goshen bats scoreless over the final two innings to notch his second collegiate save.
Matt Kaighin worked five solid innings in his fifth start of the season, holding Goshen to six hits and one earned run. Andy Habecker (1-2) pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Defiance and was credited with his first collegiate victory.
Timofeev led the offense by going 2-4 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Kirk Jesse paced the defense by throwing out a pair of runners from center field, including the potential game-tying runner at the plate to end the game.
Defiance (11-11, 4-4 HCAC) will be shooting for its fourth win in five tries on Wednesday, when it travels to Earlham for a single game starting at 5:00 pm.
