TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 2009 season came to an end on a sour note on Sunday, as Rose-Hulman cruised past the Yellow Jackets for a 23-1 victory to wrap up the third seed in the upcoming Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Engineers scored a run in the bottom of the first and added four more in the third, before blowing the game open with four in the fourth and 10 more in the fifth. Defiance managed just four hits on the afternoon off the bats of Brent Kremer, Nick Welling, Casey Kahsen and David Riley.
DC's lone run came in the top of the seventh inning, when Welling singled and scored on Riley's RBI single.
Defiance ends the 2009 season with a 7-31 overall mark. The Jackets went 3-18 in league action and are set to return all nine offensive starters. DC will need to replenish a rotation depleted by departing seniors Aaron Stewart, Brad Timofeev and Nick Picciano.
