LEXINGTON, Ky. – Defiance broke loose for seven runs in the final three innings of Friday's HCAC opener but could not overcome an early nine run deficit and fell by a 13-7 score at Transylvania.
Brad Timofeev (1-2) and the Jackets matched zeroes with the Pioneers through the first two innings, until the powerful Transylvania offense got on track in the third. TU put three runs on the board in that frame and built a commanding, 9-0, lead heading into the seventh inning.
DC finally solved Korey Colyer (2-0) in the seventh, when a fielding error to open the inning was followed by an Alex Timofeev RBI single and a double off the bat of Braden Brugler. Casey Kahsen and Brandon Belew followed by driving home Timofeev and Brugler to trim the deficit to 9-3.
The Pioneers immediately answered with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning to push the spread to 13-3, before the Jackets added two runs in each of the their final two trips to the plate.
Transylvania raked out 13 runs on 17 hits for the win, while Defiance countered with seven runs on eight hits.
Alex Timofeev, Tim Pitro and Michael Dushane had two hits each and Brugler and Mykel Rosario each collected one hit to round out the attack.
