Yellow Jackets swept by #16 Transylvania
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College volleyball team was swept Sunday afternoon (10-25, 13-25, 8-25) by the nationally ranked Transylvania Pioneers. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 3-15 overall and 0-4 in the HCAC. Transylvania improves to 17-5 overall and 4-0 in the HCAC.
The Pioneers got off to a quick start in set by winning the first three points. Jaelyn Tomoletz and Ellie Belvo recorded back-to-back kills to put the Yellow Jackets on the board. Another kill from Belvo had Defiance trailing 7-4, but the Pioneers scored the next nine points to take a 16-4 lead and control the set. Belvo and Jamia Murray had kills late in the set but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers took set one 25-10 and clinched it with an attack error from Belvo.
Transy jumped out on top again in set two and led the entire set. Back-to-back kills from Abi Teders and Jamia Murray brought Defiance within two points, 7-5. A kill from Jaelyn Tomoletz and a service error from Alex O'Connor cut the deficit to three, 14-11. Transy would then win the next five points and in total win 11 of the final 13 points of the set to take a 2-0 set lead.
The Pioneers led wire-to-wire again in set three. The first point for Defiance in the set came from a service error by Transy. All three Yellow Jacket points early in the set were errors from their opponent. The Pioneers blew the set open by winning nine straight points to take a 16-3 lead. Three of the offensive points for Defiance in the set were kills by Murray and Tomoletz.
Defiance finished the match with 17 kills, 16 assists, and 26 digs. The Pioneers finished with 46 kills, 41 assists, and 38 digs.
Ellie Belvo led the way in kills with seven while Jamia Murray and Jaelyn Tomoletz each finished with four. Courtney Maxwell recorded nine assists and Kendra Kline had four assists.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Wednesday night (Oct. 18) against Earlham at 7 p.m. at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
