DEFIANCE, Ohio - As a good crowd filled in the Karl H. Weaner Center for Purple with a Purpose Night, Defiance College volleyball promptly rewarded the Yellow Jacket faithful with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-19) sweep of HCAC foe Anderson University. Purple with a Purpose, a collaboration between Defiance College volleyball and Alpha Phi Omega, is an annual event that fundraises and generates awareness for pancreatic cancer.
The first set saw Anderson grab a small lead to begin the action before Coach Brie Brenner's side snatched the lead back with a string of aces from Brianna Wheeler (Sturgis, Mich. / Sturgis). DC never relinquished the lead after the middle of the set and pulled out the 25-17 win.
Despite obtaining the opening two points in set two, Anderson quickly fell victim to the Yellow Jacket attack. With Alexis Kiessling (Defiance / Defiance) at the service line, DC reeled off nine straight points to jump out to a 10-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets quickly finished the set, allowing the visitors to score just 12 points.
Similarly, the third set saw DC rally from an early deficit to jump out to a near double-digit lead. Defiance had no issues closing out the contest as Delaney Monnin (Defiance / Tinora) smacked home the match-ending kill.
On the attack, Monnin led the Purple and Gold with 12 kills. The sophomore also added six digs and two aces to her .121 hitting percentage. Emma Seitz (Toledo / Central Catholic) followed closely behind with her 10 kill performance, marking back-to-back double-digit kill performances for the senior. The Toledo native also led the team with three total blocks on the night.
Defensively, Morgan Porter (Defiance / Defiance) recorded another team-high performance with 24 digs. The junior libero has recorded 20 or more digs in seven consecutive matches for the Yellow Jackets. Kiessling, Porter's fellow Defiance native, followed with 11 digs on the evening.
With the sweep, Defiance improves to 15-9 overall and a 3-3 mark in HCAC play. The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Saturday, October 26, as they welcome both 23rd ranked Transylvania University and Olivet College to campus for a tri-match. DC's action is slated for 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm respectively.
