DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance volleyball team spiked the Mt. Saint Joseph Lions, 3-1, to remain perfect in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
The Yellow Jackets (8-8 overall, 3-0 HCAC) dropped set one 14-25 but rallied to claim the next three sets 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 en route to the win.
Defiance was led in the contest by sophomore Jenni Davis (Delta) with a team-high 11 kills and one assist. Freshman Morgan Porter (Defiance) added nine kills for the Yellow Jackets and two blocks.
The Yellow Jackets came out strong in set two as they used a five point rally late in the set, led by a kill from senior Danielle Robbins (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) to capture the 23-13 advantage. Robbins continued to spike the Lion defense as she connected with sophomore Abigail Cronin (Lambertville, Mich./Cardinal Stritch Catholic) to win the set, 25-16.
Defiance dominated much of set three as Cronin recorded a service ace that put the Yellow Jackets on top 4-1. Defiance defended home court and rallied for the final two points to claim the 25-22 advantage.
In the final set, the Yellow Jackets used a string of rallies to claim the 25-18 win. DC's big rally came early in the set as a Lion miscue and a service ace from Porter gave Defiance the 11-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets never looked back recording 13 kills en route to the match victory.
