Purple and Gold go 1-1 on the day

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The first day of the Rose-Hulman Invitational brought one win and one loss for the Yellow Jackets.

DC (3-3) first played Saint Ambrose (5-4) and fell in three sets.  They dropped in close sets in all.  The scores were 25-17, 28-26, 26-24.

Meredith Shank (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) and Kelsey Tietje (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) led DC in kills.  They both got into double digits with 10 kills apiece.

The Yellow Jackets played very strong in the back row in the three sets.  The defense was led by Rebecca Kain (Orland, Ind. / Prairie Heights) who had 20 digs.  Ari Mahaffey (Porter, Ind. / Chesterton) also got into double figures with 10.

Three Yellow Jackets added nine digs apiece for the relentless DC defense.  Caroline Hesterman (Fort Wayne, Ind. / North Side), Jaidyn Patridge (Toledo, Ohio / Springfield), and Alicia Kalik (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) teamed up for the 27 digs.  Kalik also added 23 assists.

The Yellow Jackets then looked to right the ship against Illinois College (1-2).  They did that and more, winning convincingly 25-15, 25-14, 25-20.

Several Yellow Jackets helped control the net against Illinois College.  Five different players had six or more kills in the three set match.

Shank led DC in the kill department again with 10.  Tietje and Bree Anderson (Huntertown, Ind. / Carroll) added eight apiece for the Yellow Jackets.  Also having a nice match at the net was Hope Neargarder (Union City, Ohio / Mississinawa Valley) who added six kills.

Leading the defense once again was Kain who dug up 17 balls in the back row.  Makayla Dennis (Bryan, Ohio / Bryan) had seven digs of her own while Shank and Anderson added six apiece.

Kalik put together a complete game for the Yellow Jackets and flirted with a triple-double.  The setter had 30 assists for the three sets, while adding nine digs and seven kills.

DC will look to continue its winning ways tomorrow against Illinois Tech and Webster.  Game times are set to begin at 11 am and 1 pm.
