ALLIANCE, Ohio – The 2009 season got underway for the Defiance College volleyball team on Friday with a pair of matches at the Mount Union Tournament. DC pulled out a five-set win against Oberlin to start the day, before dropping a straight-set loss to Alma.
Danyel Lipps led the charge for the Purple and Gold in the first match, posting 12 kills, one block and two aces to go with a team-leading 30 digs. Setters Julie Brunsman and Kelsey Ferguson combined for 41 assists, as DC edged Oberlin by a 25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-8 count.
In the second match of the day, Defiance fell 25-16, 26-24, 25-21 to Alma. Sara Porter paced the defense for DC with 18 digs, while Lipps stayed hot with nine kills, one block and five digs.
Defiance (1-1) will be back in action on Saturday in the second day of the Mt. Union Tournament. The Jackets are set to take on Case Western in a 12:00 pm start, before playing in the championship or consolation round that afternoon.
