BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Defiance College volleyball team saw its bid for at least a share of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship fall short on Tuesday evening, as the Jackets fell in straight sets to a red-hot Bluffton squad.
The Beavers had won six-straight contests entering play on Tuesday and had not dropped a match on their home court this season. The Yellow Jackets could not snap either of those streaks and fell 25-23, 28-26, 25-16 to end their chance at the first HCAC crown in program history.
Kristen Nicely tallied 14 kills and a .342 hitting percentage in the loss and Danyel Lipps turned in 11 kills to go with a .533 clip and 17 digs. Sara Porter chipped in 10 digs and Julie Brunsman ended with 29 assists.
The loss drops Defiance to the second seed in the 2008 HCAC Tournament, which will be hosted by the top-seeded Mount St. Joseph Lions. DC (14-12, 6-1 HCAC) will take on the winner of the Anderson and Manchester matchup on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 pm. With a victory, DC would advance to the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 pm.
