Fifth-Set Victory Carries DC Past Hanover

HANOVER, Ind. – The Defiance College volleyball team overcame a 10-2 in the fifth set to grab a 3-2 victory over Hanover College on Friday, September 26. The Jackets move to 1-0 in HCAC play with the win, after defeating the defending HCAC champions for the first time since the 2006 campaign.
The Panthers claimed the first set 25-23, before DC posted consecutive-set victories, 25-17 and 25-20, to take a 2-1 advantage. Hanover would use a 25-14 win to force a fifth set, where the Jackets would come from behind to record the victory, 17-15.
Kristen Nicely and Danyel Lipps led the Defiance attack, each tallying double-double performances on the night. Nicely recorded 19 kills to go along with her 11 digs and four blocks, as the freshman reached the double-digit kill plateau for the tenth time in her last 11 matches. Lipps posted ten kills and ten digs in the contest, giving her seven double-doubles on the season. Heather Bradshaw led the Jacket defense with 22 digs, while Kelsey Ferguson had 45 assists from her setter position.
DC, 9-8, takes the court again tomorrow, Saturday, September 27, when it travels to Franklin, Ind. for a HCAC matchup at 12:00 p.m. The Jackets will look to finish the weekend 2-0 in conference play with victory over the 2-14 Grizzlies.
