Jackets Claim OWU Invitational Championship

DELAWARE, Ohio – Defiance won for the fifth time in six matches, en route to winning the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational Championship on Saturday. The Jackets topped Grove City and Otterbein on the second day of the seven-team tournament and finished the weekend with a 4-0 mark.
DC began the day by pulling out a 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12 victory over Grove City. Danyel Lipps led the charge with a 23-kill, 14-dig effort and was followed by Kristen Nicely's 19 kills. Kelsey Ferguson pushed up 58 assists and Sara Porter combined with Heather Bradshaw for 47 digs.
The Jackets then carried their 3-0 record in the tournament into a match against Otterbein and sealed the championship with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 25-18 win over the Cardinals. Bradshaw led the DC defense with 34 digs and Julie Brunsman posted 31 assists in her turn at the setter position. Porter and Lipps each reached double figures in kills to fuel the Defiance attack.
Defiance climbs to 5-3 after notching four wins over the weekend and adds the OWU Invitational Championship as an early season highlight. Nicely turned in solid play all weekend and earned a spot on the OWU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio, to take on Heidelberg at 7:00 pm.
