Women's Track with Solid Showing to Begin 2018

GENEVA, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's track and field team finally started the 2018 portion of their schedule at the Carnegie-Mellon Invitational, hosted at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday.

The scoring came from the weight throw for the women, as senior Brooke Waidelich (Pettisville) had a best toss of 14.00 meters to place sixth, while fellow senior Hannah Williams (Swanton) threw a personal best of 13.90 meters to place seventh in the meet, as well as leaping her into the eighth spot on DC's all-time performance list. Sophomore Madi Bowman (Eaton) and senior Cassidy Santen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) also finished in the top 15, posting throws of 12.41 meters and 12.30 meters, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets also had a pair of athletes place in the top 15 in a field of 35 throwers in the shot put. Santen threw a best toss of 10.43 meters to finish in the 10th position, while Waidelich's best throw was 10.02 meters to place 13th in the field.

Freshman Meagan Trimpey (Bowling Green) also posted a personal best vault in just her second collegiate performance in the event, jumping 2.92 meters (9 feet, 7 inches). The vault was good enough to be the second best in school history, sitting behind Katie Heitkamp, who set the record of 3.20 meters in 2013. Trimpey finished 14th overall in the meet.

The Yellow Jackets saw a several personal bests on the track, as well, as six different athletes put together personal bests on the 300-meter indoor track facility.

Defiance placed in the 11th position overall out of 12 participating teams with five points. SUNY Geneseo, Case Western, and Carnegie Mellon were the top three placers in the meet.

The track team will return to the comfy confines of the George M. Smart Center on Saturday, Jan. 27 as they host the Defiance Invitational. Action for both field events and running events are set to begin at 11 a.m.
