Despite suffering a 77-54 defeat at the hands of Bluffton University, the Yellow Jackets saw many blocks to build upon for the coming season.
Senior Brooke Waidelich (Pettisville) began her season on the right foot, throwing a personal best of 14.90 meters in the weight throw, good enough for third on the all-time individual performance list. Senior Hannah Williams (Swanton) finished second in the event with a toss of 13.54 meters, and improved her mark as the ninth-best in school history. Sophomore Madi Bowman (Eaton) and senior Cassidy Santen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) wrapped up the DC sweep of the top four spots.
Santen found her way to victory in the shot put with a mark of 11.22 meters and she was followed by Waidelich's throw of 10.85 meters, good enough for second in the event.
Also finding her way onto the top 10 list was freshman Meagan Trimpey (Bowling Green), who began her career as the 10th-best in program history with a jump of 2.60 meters, good enough for third place in the event to go along with her second-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 1.32 meters.
Switching gears to the track, senior Danielle Robbins (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) highlighted the top performers for the sprint squad. Robbins placed in the second position in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash to go along with her victory in the 300-meter dash. Robbins' 60-meter time of 8.44 seconds was a career-best and improved her mark as the fifth-best in school history.
The Yellow Jacket distance medley relay squad added their names to the record books, as well. The team of sophomore Malia Ferry (Milford), Aaron Textor (Swanton), Kenna Bell (Piqua), and Olivia Fett (Defiance) put themselves into ninth on the all-time list, running a time of 14:32.94, finishing just nine seconds back of the team from Bluffton.
Defiance will resume action following the holiday break on Friday, January 12 when they make the trip to the University of Findlay for the Northwest Ohio Invitational. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m.
