Lime Leads DC Track to Sixth Place at HCAC Championships
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Yellow Jackets’ women’s track and field team totaled 42 points and finished in sixth place at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Yellow Jackets' women's track and field team totaled 42 points and finished in sixth place at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday.
The performer of the meet for the Yellow Jackets was freshman sprinter and hurdler Brooke Lime, who turned in the best finish of the day. Lime qualified for the 60-meter hurdle finals with a mark of 9.49 seconds. In the finals, the freshman ran the race in 9.60 seconds, which earned her a second place finish for the event. Lime also competed in the 400-meter dash and was the top finisher for DC in the event, finishing in fifth place.
The Purple and Gold's distance medley relay team made Defiance history at the championships. The team consisting of Erika DeBos, Courtney Swabb, Ellen Stryffeler and Sadie Daeger broke the DC all-time record in the event with a finishing time of 13:36.45, breaking the old record by over nine seconds. The performance earned the relay team a fourth place finish and five points for the Jackets.
Another notable performer who earned points in multiple events was junior mid-distance runner and pole vaulter Katie Heitkamp. The junior cleared a height of 9-08.00 in the pole vault and resulted in a third place finish. Heitkamp also ran in the 400-meter dash and placed eighth with a time of 1:06.06.
The Yellow Jackets are next in action on Friday, February 24 when they host their first ever indoor track and field meet. The meet will be held at the brand new George M. Smart Athletic Center.
