Women’s Track and Field Victorious at Denison Invitational
GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Defiance College women’s track and field squad traveled to Granville, Ohio on Saturday and won the Lid-Lifter Denison Invitational.
GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's track and field squad traveled to Granville, Ohio on Saturday and won the Lid-Lifter Denison Invitational. DC finished the meet with 142 points. Following the Jackets were Wittenberg (123), Denison (105) and Transylvania (46).
The Purple and Gold claimed first place in nearly half the events by winning seven of 15.
The Yellow Jackets especially excelled in the team relays at the invite. Defiance won each relay which included the 4x200, the 4x400 and the distance medley relay.
The 4x200 team consisted of freshmen twin sister Morgan and Maegan Redick, sophomore Kali George and senior Courtney Swabb. The four recorded a time of 1:54.03 which currently places first in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The mark is also the third best time in DC history.
Junior sprinter and pole vaulter Katie Heitkamp also turned in a great performance on the afternoon. Heitkamp, the current DC record-holder in the pole vault event, bested her previous personal record by clearing a height of 10-02.75. The mark also is the best by any women's HCAC athlete in the event for the 2012 season.
Another junior who turned in a career-day was jumper Erika DeBos, who jumped a height of 5-01.00. The height moves the junior up to the third best performer all-time for Defiance College women's high jump and places eighth overall in the HCAC.
Other winners at the meet were senior distance runner Ellen Stryffeler in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:53.16 and freshman jumper Kate Borer in the triple jump with a distance of 29-09.25.
DC is back in action on Saturday, February 4 when the team travels to Ada, Ohio for the Ohio Northern Invitational. The meet is slated to begin 10 a.m.
