GREENWOOD, Ind. – Marlea Rolander and Austin Trivett led their respective teams to a pair of victories at the Dick Small Invitational on Saturday, and were honored by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Monday, when the league office announced its athletes of the week.
Rolander was tagged as the HCAC Track Athlete of the Week after helping the women's squad earn a team title with a pair of first-place showings in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. The junior hurdler ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17.53 seconds, edging out Bluffton's Kayla Mullenhour by three one-hundredths of a second for the fourth fastest time in the conference this season.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Rolander coasted through the finish line in 1:12.82 for the third-fastest time on the HCAC's performances list. Rolander and the Yellow Jackets topped the team standings with 222 points on the day, putting a 101-point cushion between themselves and second-place Goshen College.
Trivett was named the HCAC Field Athlete of the Week after personally accounting for 31.50 of Defiance's 191.50 points at the meet. The senior athlete placed first in the javelin throw and 110-meter hurdles, and third in the high jump and pole vault at the meet.
Trivett's mark of 164-00 in the javelin throw ranks first in the HCAC this season, and is just ten feet short of his personal best. His performances in the pole vault, high jump and 110-meter hurdles each rank second in the conference this season.
The Yellow Jackets' track and field teams will travel to Indiana Wesleyan University this weekend to compete in the Polar Bear Invitational, before returning one week later to host the Yellow Jacket Open.
