Lady Jackets Ranked Fourth After First Day of Competition
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The women’s track and field team completed its first day of competition at the HCAC Championships in fourth place with 39.50 total points.
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The women's track and field team completed its first day of competition at the HCAC Championships in fourth place with 39.50 total points. Franklin College (52), Manchester College (44) and Rose-Hulman (41) comprise the three teams ahead of the Jackets entering day two.
The Jackets primed themselves for a strong second day of competition with several runners posting solid times, to qualify for the finals.
Shavonda Price was spectacular in her first HCAC Championship Meet, posting first-place performances in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. The sophomore athlete also posted a second-place finish in the javelin throw with a heave of 111-04.00 feet.
Senior sprinter Kristin Goldstein had a nice day, finishing second and eighth in the 100 and 200-meter dash preliminaries. Goldstein also contributed in the javelin throw with a seventh-place toss of 98-01.00 feet.
Freshman runner, Ashlyn Howell, showed up big for the Yellow Jackets as well. Howell placed third in both the 100-meter and 200-meter prelims, and claimed second place in the triple jump with a personal and school-record leap of 34-07.75 feet.
Kaitlin Switzer improved on last year's third-place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, claiming the top spot in the race to earn 10 points for the Yellow Jackets. The junior runner outpaced the rest of the field by nearly 30 seconds in the event.
Pole vault was a strong event for the Lady Jackets as well. Emily Cole took third place with a clearance of 8-11.75 feet, while Katie Heitkamp tied for fifth with a height of 8-06.00.
The final day of the HCAC Championships will take place tomorrow, Saturday, May 1, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
