Singles Split Highlights HCAC Contest
DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College women's tennis team played host to fellow Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team Earlham College on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a score of 5-4.
Doubles action was highlighted by an 8-4 victory from the number two doubles pairing of Chelsey Braunwart (Trenton / Edgewood) and A.J. Breneman (Bryan / Bryan).
Taking a 2-1 deficit into singles action, the Yellow Jackets looked to win a majority of singles matches. Four singles victories were needed for the Purple and Gold to secure the HCAC victory, but the Quakers earned a few decisive wins to steal the match 5-4. Breneman, Cayla Walker (Archbold / Archbold), and Sydney Huston (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence) each earned victories in their matches. Walker cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Breneman was able to pull through a 6-3, 6-4 win. Huston's contest was pushed to three sets after the sophomore dropped the first set 6-4, she rebounded to win the second 6-0 before her opponent was forced to retire in the third set.
The action all came down to a decisive number five singles match. After dropping the first set in a close 7-5, Braunwart rolled to a 6-0 set win to force a third and final set. Earlham's Hulleman was able to prevail in the final set 6-1 to earn the decisive fifth victory for the Quakers.
The loss brings the Yellow Jacket's record to 2-8 on the season. The women are next in action Friday, Sept. 28th at 4:30 pm as they travel to Miami-Middletown.
