Singles Success Leads to Victory in HCAC Contest
NORTH MANCHESTER, IN - The Defiance College women's tennis team made the trip to Manchester University on Thursday evening. A strong showing allowed the Yellow Jackets to pick up their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the 2018 season by way of a 6-3 scoreline.

Doubles action allowed the hosts to get off to a good start, winning two of the three matches. Number one doubles did not disappoint as the sides battled to the wire. The Defiance pairing of Hannah Hesterman (Archbold / Archbold) and Cayla Walker (Archbold / Archbold) fought to win 8 games in the contest before dropping the match 9-8 to Manchester's Eichenauer and Brettnacher. The number two pairing of A.J. Breneman (Bryan / Bryan) and Chelsey Braunwart (Trenton / Edgewood) earned the loan doubles victory for the Purple and Gold, earning the win 8-4. To wrap up doubles contests, Sydney Huston (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence) and Alexa St. Julian (Oregon / Clay) fell by a final of 8-3.
The singles side of action proved key for the Yellow Jacket's success as the visitors earned five of the possible six victories. Hesterman crusied to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in number one singles. Likewise, Breneman and Walker earned 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 victories for the Purple and Gold. In number four singles, a close contest between Huston and Manchester's Brazo was abandoned in the second set, giving Huston the 6-4, 6-6 (5-1) win. Braunwart had a close contest in number five singles, earning the win by a final of 6-3, 6-4. The loan Spartan singles victory came in the number six slot as Defiance's Rylea Amspaugh (Nashport / Lakewood) fell in a three set contest 7-6, 4-6, 6-10.
Head Coach Gonzalo Vivas attested to the Yellow Jacket performance after the match stating, "I'm very proud of how hard our players fought on every match today."
The victory improves the Defiance women's record to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the HCAC. The Yellow Jackets will next be in action Sunday, September 23rd as they travel to Capital for a 4:00 pm matchup.
