Women's Tennis Beats Earlham
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's tennis team claimed its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win of the season with a 7-2 win against Earlham (Ind.) College at the George M. Smart Center in Defiance.
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's tennis team claimed its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win of the season with a 7-2 win against Earlham (Ind.) College at the George M. Smart Center in Defiance.
Defiance (2-8, 1-5 HCAC) captured its first team point with an 8-1 win at first doubles thanks to the duo of sophomore Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and senior Colby Heeter (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg).
The Yellow Jackets trailed early in both the second and third doubles matches, but rallied with the teams of sophomore Cayla Walker (Archbold) and junior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol) along with sophomore Danielle Vance (Defiance) and junior Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) both winning by the final scores of 8-6 to give DC a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.
The Jackets went on to win four of the six singles matches beginning with a convincing 6-1 and 6-0 win by Hesterman at first singles. Walker posted the next victory for DC by defeating her fifth-singles opponent, 6-1 and 6-1. The third victory was turned in by Heeter who also won in convincing fashion with the final scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Vance recorded the final singles victory for the Jackets defeating her opponent, 6-2 and 6-3.
Alexander played a tough match at third singles needing all three sets to decide the outcome. Alexander claimed the first set with a 6-4 win. She then battled her opponent to a tiebreaker in the second set, but fell by the final of 7-6 (7-3), forcing a third set. The final set proved to be just as competitive as the second with Earlham squeaking out a 12-10 victory in a pro-set to claim the, 2-1 overall victory.
After dropping the first set, 6-0, Combs captured a pair of points in her sixth-singles match, but fell short, 6-2, overall in the set.
Defiance will next travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for a HCAC matchup against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
