Women's Tennis Falls to ONU and Concordia

DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's tennis team lost a pair of matches in a tri-match to Ohio Northern University and Concordia (Mich.) University at the Dix Tennis Courts in Defiance.
The closest match of the day for Defiance (1-5) came against Concordia, but the Jackets fell to the Cardinals, 7-2, overall. Concordia (1-2) swept all three doubles matches, but not without some competition from DC. At first doubles, the duo of sophomores Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and Danielle Vance (Defiance) played a heavily contested match forcing their opponents to go the extra distance with a final score of 9-7.
Sophomore Cayla Walker (Archbold) and junior Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) captured three games in their doubles matchup, but would fall short by the final of 8-3. In the other doubles paring, junior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol) and senior Colby Heeter (Bloombsurg, Pa./Bloomsburg) took a point in their match losing by the final of 8-1.
The Yellow Jackets recorded two victories in the singles play at first and second singles. Hesterman won convincingly, 6-1 and 6-2, and Vance made short work of her opponent sweeping the second singles spot, 6-0 and 6-0.
After dropping the first set in her third singles match, Alexander came back in the second set to win, 6-2. The match was forced into a decisive third set where Concordia came out on top in a pro set, 10-4.
Concordia went on to win the final three singles matches despite Heeter taking a game in the second set at fourth singles, 6-0 and 6-1, and Combs won two games in her match at sixth singles in the second set, 6-0 and 6-2, as the Cardinals went on to post the 7-2 final.
The match against Ohio Northern was a decisive win for the Polar Bears taking all nine match points leading to a 9-0 victory. ONU jumped out to a quick 3-0 match lead by winning all three of the doubles matches. Hesterman and Vance along with the team of Walker and Combs were the only Jacket teams to capture a game during their individual matches, both falling by the scores of 8-1.
In singles play, ONU dominated at all six singles with the only individual game point for DC coming at first singles with Hesterman capturing a game in set number two, but losing the overall match, 6-0 and 6-1.
Defiance is scheduled to host Mount St. Joseph University on Saturday, Sept. 17 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match at the Dix Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
