DC Falls to Franklin in HCAC Opener

FRANKLIN, IND. -- The Defiance College women's tennis team opened the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of its schedule against Franklin (Ind.) College, but fell to the Grizzlies, 9-0, in Franklin, Ind.
Defiance (0-2, 0-1 HCAC) began the day with doubles competition with the duo of junior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol) and senior Colby Heeter (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) played in the closest match for the Yellow Jackets at number two doubles which ended in Franklin (1-1, 1-0 HCAC) winning, 8-3.
Sophomores Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and Danielle Vance (Defiance) combined efforts at first doubles and took one game from their Grizzly opponents, but lost 8-1 overall.
Franklin captured the third doubles match point with a final of 8-0 to take a 3-0 overall match lead.
In singles play, Hesterman had the closest matchup at first singles winning a combined four games, but lost her individual match, 6-3 and 6-1. Sophomore Cayla Walker (Archbold) won two games at fifth singles with the overall win going in favor of Franklin, 6-1 and 6-1. Vance rounded out the Jacket players to win a point in her individual match at second singles and fell by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Franklin swept the other two singles matches by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to complete the shutout and won by the final overall score of 9-0.
Defiance will return to action tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 11) with a pair of matches begining with a HCAC matchup against Hanover (Ind.) College at 10 a.m. The Jackets will then take on Berea (Ky.) College in a non-conference match at 1 p.m. in Hanover, Ind.
