Women's Tennis Loses to Thomas More in Season Opener
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's tennis team fell to Thomas More (Ky.) College, 9-0, in a non-conference match and season opener at the Dix Tennis Courts.
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's tennis team fell to Thomas More (Ky.) College, 9-0, in a non-conference match and season opener at the Dix Tennis Courts.
Thomas More (3-0) began the day by sweeping all three of the doubles matches. The Defiance (0-1) duos of sophomores Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and Danielle Vance (Defiance) along with junior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol) and senior Colby Heeter (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) both won two games in their respective matches, but would end up dropping the overall matches by the final scores of 8-2. Newcomers Cayla Walker (Archbold) and Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) fell to their opponents, 8-3, giving the Saints a 3-0 margin in the overall team score.
TMC also swept all six of the singles matches. Alexander and Combs recorded the closest matches of the day for DC with Alexander falling short in the first set, 6-4, and losing the second set, 6-1. Combs fell behind losing the first set, 6-2, and played a hard-fought second set losing by the final of 6-4.
In addition, Walker won a couple of points in both sets of her match at fifth singles, but the Saints came away with the overall victory with the final scores of 6-2 and 6-2.
Defiance are scheduled to travel to Franklin, Ind. for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual match against Franklin (Ind.) College on Saturday, Sept. 10. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
