DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's soccer team opened the contest with the first two goals and powered their way to a 3-1 victory against the Earlham (Ind.) College Quakers in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in Richmond, Ind.
Defiance (2-8, 2-2 HCAC) freshman Kat Wicher (Toledo/Whitmer) opened the scoring in the 13th minute, blasting a shot from 30 yards out past the keeper and into the back of the net to give DC a 1-0 advantage. Earlham (1-10, 1-3 HAC) dominated in the shot column, holding a 9-1 edge over the next 20 minutes, but freshman netminder Madi Bowman (Eaton) kept Earlham scoreless.
At the 41-minute mark, Defiance added a second goal on a fast break off the foot of freshman Miranda Herevia (Port Clinton) to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 2-0. Just 25 seconds later, Earlham responded with a goal of their own off a collision in front of the net to cut the Defiance lead to 2-1 at the break.
Despite Earlham taking the first six shots of the second stanza, Defiance would score the lone goal. In the 80th minute, freshman Sarah Madaras (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) kicked one in from inside the six-yard box to take a 3-1 lead, which would ultimately be the final outcome.
The Quakers outshot the Yellow Jackets, 19-6 in a losing effort, with an 8-3 edge on shots on goal. Bowman played all 90 minutes for DC, grabbing seven saves.
