DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Defiance College women's soccer team honored the seniors this afternoon as they hosted Hanover (Ind.) College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup and fell to the Panthers, 9-0.
Hanover (14-4, 8-1 HCAC) came out strong and scored right away within the first five minutes of the game, taking an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers kept the pressure on Defiance (2-15-2, 0-7-2 HCAC), controlling the offense and scoring two goals within two minutes of each other at the 18:12 and 19:54 minute marks, respectively. Panthers led the Yellow Jackets 3-0.
The Yellow Jackets retaliated, and senior midfielder Lindsay Bubnick (Vandalia/Butler) made the Panther goalkeeper do work, with a shot that ended-up being saved in the 22nd minute.
Hanover kept the rally going in their favor, scoring two more goals, the first came in the 26th minute and the second short after, in the 27th minute. The pair of goals gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead.
The Yellow Jacket offense was looking to score and the closest opportunity of the day came before the half, when Bubnick had a shot that just hit the crossbar and bounced out. Junior midfielder Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas / Lockhart) was there to get the rebound, but the Panther goalie was there to stop the goal. The deficit remained 5-0 going into halftime.
The second half belonged to the Panthers. Despite solid efforts from senior defenders Melina Alexander (Clio, Mich. / Clio Area) and Chelsie Moyer (Tipp City/Tippecanoe) and the Yellow Jacket defense, Hanover scored four more times throughout the second half, taking a 9-0 lead.
Defiance was unable to get any shots off the rest of the half and the Panthers came up with the big victory.
In the net for Defiance, junior goalkeeper, June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) recorded eight saves.
