DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College took to the field at home, hosting Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Anderson University.
DC (2-11-1, 0-3-1 HCAC) and Anderson (7-4-2, 2-0-2 HCAC) played to a 0-0 tie.
As the game got underway, Chelsie Moyer (Tipp City, Ohio / Tippecanoe) became the all-time leader in starts. She now has 71 starts in her career, setting the new DC record.
Moyer also is now tied with the most games played by a Yellow Jacket with 71 and one minute back of tying the all-time leader in minutes. Moyer has played 6,460 minutes.
Moyer, Melina Alexander (Clio, Mich. / Clio Area), and Katie McGlacken (Canton, Mich. / Canton) led the DC defense to a huge shutout against a powerful Ravens offense.
AU had only been shutout twice all season and came into the matchup with DC averaging 1.5 goals per game.
June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) did her part when needed, saving 10 shots to keep her clean sheet. It is the fifth time this season in which she has reached double-digits in saves.
Anderson pressured early, taking three shots on goal in the first 25 minutes. Head Coach Jenny Vincent then went to her bench, bringing in Jill Crowell (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Plainwell) who provided a huge spark. After Crowell's entrance, AU failed to get another shot on goal in the first half.
The Ravens and the Yellow Jackets were all knotted up at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.
Delgreco had a busy second half, stopping six shots in the second 45. Three of those stops were in a three minute window from the 64th minute to the 67th minute.
DC's offense started to push the issue midway through the second half. Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas / Lockhart) took the first shot on goal for the Yellow Jackets at the 72 minute mark. Taylor Lantz (Elkhart, Ind. / Concord) followed up Islas 30 seconds later with a shot on goal of her own.
The Yellow Jackets best chance came from Maegan Redick (Lima, Ohio / Shawnee) in the 87th minute. Redick got behind AU's defense on a beautiful pass from Eryn Porter (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance). Redick then took a shot but an impressive save from the Ravens goalkeeper kept the game tied.
Crowell put one last shot on goal for DC with one minute left to play. That was the last threat either offense came up with in regulation.
In the first overtime, neither offense could get going as fatigue started to play a factor. The lone shot on goal from either team came from AU which Delgreco put a stop to for her tenth save of the match.
DC's defense continued to battle late, despite many threats from the Ravens in the second overtime. Anderson threatened to end the game late when they got deep into Yellow Jacket territory. Alexander sacrificed her body twice in the 109th minute to secure the tie. Once with a shot inside the box and then again a few seconds later to put a stop to what could have been a dangerous cross.
The final whistle came a few seconds later, finalizing the 0-0 tie between DC and Anderson.
The tie gives the Yellow Jackets a much needed point in the HCAC standings.
DC will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky to battle Transylvania. Start time is set for 12 pm.
