Defiance, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets turned things around in the second game of the season and closed the Purple and Gold Classic with a win. They topped Heidelberg, 3-1.
Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas / Lockhart) got things going early for DC (1-1-0). She got behind the defense on a nice pass from Eryn Porter (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance) just four minutes into the game. Islas took the breakaway and made the most of it, beating the keeper and giving DC an early 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Heidelberg (0-2-0) found the equalizer to tie things up at one. Kristen Keenan took an open look from just outside the 18 yard box and made the most of it.
Heidelberg continued to threaten DC over the next 15 minutes. DC managed just one shot compared to Heidelberg's four. Three of the four shots were on target, but goalkeeper June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) turned them away as she would all afternoon.
DC put the pressure back on Heidelberg as Maegan Redick (Lima, Ohio / Shawnee) let go of a shot at the 31:44 mark, causing the Heidelberg goalie to make a play.
Just a short two minutes later, with the momentum still in their favor, the Yellow Jackets were able to take a 2-1 lead. Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) found the back of the net on a cross from Lindsay Bubnick (Vandalia, Ohio / Butler) to give DC the one goal lead.
Neither team could break through the rest of the half as Defiance held the 2-1 advantage at the midway point.
It took just 12 minutes in the second half for Redick to give DC a commanding lead. Memmer was able to find the senior behind the defense. Redick then used her speed to capitalize on the open field and beat the keeper for her second goal of the season. DC held a 3-1 lead at that point.
The teams then both took turns threating each other but neither team could find the net the rest of the way.
Back-to-back shots from Heidelberg at the 70 minute mark were both turned away by Delgreco to secure the DC win. Delgreco ended the game with eight saves.
The Yellow Jackets held on for the big win despite being outshot 20 to 12. DC took five shots on goal compared to Heidelberg's nine.
The win marks the first career victory for Head Coach Jenny Vincent. She and her team will look to continue the winning ways next weekend at the Marietta Tournament. They open up play on Friday against Marietta. Start time is set for 4 pm.
