Last year the Yellow Jackets finished 3-5-1 in HCAC play for a fifth place finish, just missing out on conference postseason play.
This year, DC will be under new leadership as Jenny Vincent takes over as head coach.
"We are excited to begin a new era in women's soccer at Defiance College," Vincent said. "We have fresh new talent coming in and teamed up with our experienced upperclassmen, it makes me very optimistic about the upcoming season and the direction of our program culture."
Four of those upperclassmen are seniors that just a season ago started in a combined 72 games. Melina Alexander (Clio, Mich. / Clio Area), Lindsay Bubnick (Vandalia, Ohio / Butler), Chelsie Moyer (Tipp City, Ohio / Tippecanoe), and Maegan Redick (Lima, Ohio / Shawnee) have all been named to the HCAC Preseason Players to Watch list.
Moyer will head the backfield as Alexander, Bubnick, and Redick will return as strong midfielders.
Moyer is the only returning player that played in every single minute last year for DC, totaling 1,751. She also scored one goal for the Yellow Jackets.
Alexander will help with duties on the defensive side of the field. A starter in every game, she saw nearly 1,500 minutes of play as a pesky defender in the midfield.
Bubnick and Redick will be key contributors to the offense. Last season Bubnick scored six goals and Redick scored four, the two highest goal totals returning from last season.
"The start of a new season is always a thrilling time. Even more so now, we are motivated and eager to get to work in preparing for the 2014 season and are excited for the opportunity for DC Women's Soccer to make an impact within the region as well as the HCAC," Vincent said. "We have a lot to prove this year and we are ready to get started."
The Yellow Jackets open their season with the Purple and Gold Classic at home. They host Waynesburg on August 29 at 2:30 pm and then host Heidelberg at 2 pm on August 31.
