The Hornets scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 20th minute, as Sarah Arnosky set up Lepper for the only goal of the match.
DC had several near-misses in the second period and was not able to convert its scoring opportunities, including a shot by Amber Harrington that ricocheted off the post.
Kalamazoo outshot the Jackets 22-10, but it was the play of Colleen Cross that kept the match close. The North Branch, Mich. native tallied a career-high 11 saves, blocking several point-blank shot attempts. The freshman leads the team with 20 saves this season, as the Defiance defense has only allowed 1.55 goals per game on the year.
Lauren Ranalli led DC with five shots, two on goal, while Harrington finished the match with two shots with one on goal. Melissa Alston, Hannah Davis and Monica Switzer each recorded a shot for the Jackets.
Defiance returns to action on Sunday, September 7, when it travels to Hiram College for a 2:00 p.m. match.
