Trio of DC golfers shoot 89 at Kalamazoo's Steven Tyler Memorial
PORTAGE, Mich. – Defiance College men's and women's golf competed at Monday's Steven Tyler Memorial at the Moors Golf Course and Yellow Jackets from each program turned in scorecards of 89 to lead the purple and gold.
Cassi Van Dyke and Winter Boroff shared the top score for the women's team and even recorded twin scores of 45 and 44 on the front and back nine respectively. Van Dyke recorded the team's lone birdie of the round on the second hole before recording six pars through the rest of the day. Both golfers are averaging in the mid-80s with Boroff notching her 14th sub-90 round of the year compared to Van Dyke's 13th.
Leading the men's team was Bretton Basford's 89 for his fourth straight round under 90 to start the spring season. Like Van Dyke, Basford notched a birdie on the second hole for the team's only circle on the scorecard.
The women's team finished seventh among eight teams with a team score of 391. Isabelle Vance fired a round of 95, and Emily Momany shot 118. Adrian won the women's title at 318, seven shots better than second place. Adrian also earned the individual title with Lauren Reeds' 76 to finish one-shot clear of second place.
On the men's side, Defiance finished with a 412 as a team. Brendan Garvin hit a 104 followed by Sam Boyles' round of 106, Zach Canterbury at 113 and Will Garlock with a 126. Division II Davenport University claimed the team title with a score of 309, reacting Lourdes by six shots. Davenport's Gunnar Schuster earned medalist honors with an even-par 72 to edge out teammate Dominic Ciantar's 74.
The men's team travels to Angola on Tuesday to play in Trine's AC Eddy Invitational. The women's team hits the links again on Friday for the opening day of the Yellow Jacket Spring Invitational hosted by DC at Moose Landing Country Club, which will also feature the men's team.
