Women's Golf opens spring swing in Tennessee
SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. - The opening event of the spring season for Defiance College women's golf sent the quintet to The Legacy Golf Course north of Nashville. The Yellow Jackets experienced some early-season struggles with team rounds of 405 and 401 to finish 15th in the tournament that features schools from seven different states.
Winter Boroff (Convoy, Ohio/Lincolnview) scored Defiance's top individual round and tournament total. Boroff carded an 89 on Sunday for DC's lone sub-90 round and finished with 180 for the tournament to finish 41st overall. She shot an even 46 on the front nine both days and used a birdie on the par-3 17th to glean a 91 on Saturday. Sunday's round featured six pars and was able to stay clear of triple-bogies on day two. Boroff shaved 14 strokes off her performance in the same tournament a year ago after firing twin rounds of 97 for 194.
Cassi Van Dyke (Maryville, Ohio/Maryville) ended the tournament one stroke behind Boroff with a 181, but she had the team's best Saturday round of 90 before turning in a card of 91 on Sunday. Van Dyke was DC's best player on the front-nine for the weekend by making the turn with 42 shot on Saturday followed by 41 on Sunday thanks to the team's lone birdie of the day.
Isabelle Vance finished with a 201 for the weekend after rounds of 95 and 106. Vance kept a tidy, consistent card on Saturday with just one hole marked down with a seven or more. Her first nine holes on Sunday accounted for 58 shots but closed strong by playing the front nine to a 48 to end the tournament.
Emily Momany and Aubrey Bujalski recorded scores of 245 and 247 respectively. The competition was Bujalski's first tournament action since the Manchester Invite in September 2022.
Medalist honors were awarded to Erin Donovan from Piedmont University via a tiebreaker after four golfers finished tied for first with two-day totals of 154. Donovan edged out Avery Frick from Augustana, Sabrina Nesbitt and Merick Semans, both from Sewanee. Sewanee claimed the team trophy by 12 strokes over Piedmont with tournament-low rounds on both Saturday and Sunday of 318 and 317 for a 635 total.
The next time on the links for the Yellow Jackets is two weeks away with a one-day tournament hosted by Heidelberg at Mohawk Country Club in Tiffin on March 17.
