Another strong weekend for women’s golf at Manakiki
WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Defiance College women's golf continues to rewrite the record books in 2022-23 by submitting the fifth-lowest 36-hole score in program history by firing a 746 at the John Carroll Spring Invite on Saturday and Sunday at Manakiki Golf Course.
The Yellow Jackets closed the tournament with an eighth-place finish among 10 programs a strong finish accounted for the fifth-best score on day two.
After the group of four combined for 380 on Saturday, Winter Boroff (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview) and Cassady Van Dyke (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) each broke 90 to propel the team to a 366 round on Sunday, which is good enough for the top 10 in the program's record book.
Boroff topped the team leaderboard with 182 over the weekend. She used a birdie on the 18th hole on Saturday to get into the clubhouse with a 93 and overcame five double bogeys on the front nine. She was much more consistent over the second round with a team-best 89 that included an eighth-hole birdie and three pars on the back nine.
Mari Najar (Adrian, Mich./Madison) also put together a 182 two-day total with 90 on Saturday and 92 on Sunday. Her Sunday round included birdies on the fourth and 16th but double-bogeyed nine holes.
Van Dyke shrugged out a Saturday 94 with an 89 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 183. Like Najar, Van Dyke birdied twice on the final round and stood one-under par through the first three holes. Her opening round got off to a slow start as she double-bogeyed six of her first eight holes to finish the front nine at 51, but rebounded on the back nine with a 43 and had a stretch of four straight pars.
For Isabelle Vance (Continental, Ohio/Miller City), her 199 was built on rounds of 103 on Saturday and Sunday's 96. Sunday's round included pars on four holes, including a par five and 3 of 4 par three holes.
Otterbein's Emma McGreal won the individual title among the field of 55 golfers with a 151 tournament score, good for seven shots over par for the weekend. Otterbein also won the team competition with a 656 team tally, 40 shots better than second-place Wooster. Boroff and Najar finished tied for 20th while Van Dyke checked in at 23rd followed by Vance with a 38th-place finish.
The Yellow Jackets head to Anderson Country Club next weekend for the Ravens Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
