DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College women's basketball team, in front of an electric crowd at the Karl H. Weaner Center, punched their ticket to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament defeating Earlham 62-46.
The Yellow Jackets entered the fourth quarter with vengeance, using a 10-0 run to erase a third quarter seven point deficit. The surge was led by a momentum shifting three-pointer from senior Ashley Lee (Millington, Mich.) that sent the Weaner Center into an uproar and put DC on top 37-45.
The team continued to fire on all cylinders as junior Shelby Stamm (Bellevue) posted a season-best performance hitting a jumper in the lane with 3:15 to play extending the DC lead to 57-40. The scoring frenzy continued for the Purple and Gold as senior Sam Ervin (Bloomdale/Elmwood) deemed clutch from the free-throw line sinking a pair of free-throws that sealed the victory and a birth into the HCAC Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets were led in the contest by Stamm with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point. Sophomore Kalyn Pickens (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) added eight points for the Purple and Gold.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, February 16 as they welcome Hanover for Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
