Lady Jackets Beat the Britons, Advance to Championship Game
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The DC women’s basketball team improved to 6-4 on the season after defeating the Britons of Albion College, 73-56, Friday night to kick off the Hubbard Company – Pro Rehab Tournament. The victory secures a spot for the Lady Jackets in Saturday afternoon’s championship game at the Karl H. Weaner Center.

The victory secures a spot for the Lady Jackets in Saturday afternoon's championship game at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
Coach Doumanian used a fast lineup, composed of four guards and a center, to start the game and saw the team jump out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes and 15 seconds. The Jackets pressured the ball handler all night, recording 16 steals, and capitalized with 22 points off turnovers. The transition points allowed the Jackets to score 73 points on a defense that had allowed just 53.7 points per game coming in to the match.
Shavonda Price was a playmaker on both sides of the ball, recording game-highs in points (17), assists (5) and blocks (3), as well as contributing seven rebounds and two steals. The sophomore guard has averaged 14.8 points over her last four games and is currently ranked third in the HCAC with 17 blocks on the season.
Shooting guard Courtney Schmersal was held scoreless in the first half, but came out after the break with a vengeance to post a game-high 12 second-half points. Her timely shooting helped Defiance to build its lead to as many as 17 points as the Jackets coasted to their fourth victory in their last five games.
Mandie White continued her consistent play, posting 14 points and six rebounds in addition to a game-high three steals. Freshman guard Jacquelyn Litle made an impact in her second start of the season with 10 points and two assists.
The Lady Jackets will look to win their third Hubbard Co. – Pro Rehab Tournament Title in five tries as they square off against Wilmington College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Wilmington (4-4) is coming off an 85-62 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene (6-2) in the opening game of the tournament.
