DC Falls to Anderson, 58-51
ANDERSON, Ind. – Defiance came into the game with a 5-3 road mark, but saw an early lead slip through its fingers in a 58-51 loss to Anderson University on January 10. The Jackets fall to 2-4 in the conference, while Anderson improves to 4-1 to remain unbeaten in the HCAC inside O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
ANDERSON, Ind. – Defiance came into the game with a 5-3 road mark, but saw an early lead slip through its fingers in a 58-51 loss to Anderson University on January 10. The Jackets fall to 2-4 in the conference, while Anderson improves to 4-1 to remain unbeaten in the HCAC inside O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
DC had control of the game early, grabbing an eight-point advantage, 10-2, just under seven minutes into the contest on a layup by Mandie White. Anderson responded with a 19-6 run over the next eight minutes of play to take a 21-16 lead, as the Jackets scored on only two of their next 15 possessions. Defiance was able to draw within two at the break, 29-27, on Brooke Zachrich's layup with ten ticks left on the clock.
The Ravens took advantage of seven DC turnovers in the opening eight minutes of the final period, to push their lead to ten, 44-34. The two teams traded buckets for the next ten minutes, before six straight points by White pulled the Jackets within five, 54-49. However, Anderson was able to seal the victory at the free throw line, scoring the next four points to go up by nine, before Holly Stein scored the game's final points on a layup with six seconds left.
The Jackets struggled from the charity stripe for the second straight contest, shooting just 20 percent on the game. DC finished the contest shooting 38.6 percent from the field, knocking down five shots from beyond the arc. Defiance won the battle of the boards, 43-42, as Shavonda Price recorded her fourth double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds.
Defiance put three players in double figures, while getting 34 of its 51 points in the paint. Stein led the way for the Jackets, tallying 12 points and eight rebounds in the game. White also found double-figures for Defiance with ten points to go along with her eight caroms and three steals. Anderson got 37 of its 58 points from three players, as Tiffany Bowsher, Mel Hawthorne and Kayla Martin all found double-figures.
Defiance will be back in action on Wednesday, January 14, when it travels to Cincinnati, Ohio for a HCAC matchup with the Lions of Mount St. Joseph. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
