Yellow Jackets Sweep Albion in Non-Conference Match Up
ALBION, MICH. - The Defiance College softball team traveled to Albion, Mich. for a doubleheader with the Britons on a sunny wednesday afternoon at Dempsey Field. The Purple and Gold
Defiance wasted little time getting on the board in game one as junior Brooke Gostomsky (Dayton/Covington) capitalized on a Briton miscue in the top of the third inning that placed her on second and senior Jordan Osborne (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) on third. Freshman Kalin Hubble (Anderson, Ind.) continued her hot streak at the plate as she registered her ninth RBI of the season following a single to right field that scored Osborne, 1-1. Senior Michaela Bauer (Hicksville) stepped to the plate in the clean up spot placing a sacrifice bunt that scored Gostomsky and gave DC the 2-1 advantage.
Albion responded in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored two runs on three hits to regain the 3-2 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets continued to battle at the dish as they provided the tying run in the top of the sixth inning led by Bauer with a double to left center. Moller would reach first on the next at bat as the Briton second baseman over threw first base, scoring pinch runner, senior Ely King (Mechanicsburg/Northeastern) for the 3-3 tie.
DC would claim the game one victory in the top of the seventh inning as freshman McKenzie Baker (Bellville/Clear Fork) led off the inning with a single to center field. Osborne advanced the runner to second before Hubble plated the innings first run, 4-3. The Purple and Gold scored the game winning run later in the inning as Hubble eventually reached home off a Briton wild pitch that sealed the 5-4 win.
Senior Rachel Wehrman (Fort Loramie/Minster) recorded the victory for DC pitching 6.1 innings surrendering four runs on six hits. Sophomore Taylor Biggs (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) registered her first save of the season.
Defiance scored early and often in game two as the Purple and Gold run ruled the Britons 10-0.
Hubble plated the games first run in the top of the first inning as she doubled to left field scoring Gostomsky for the early 1-0 lead. The scoring continued in the top of the second inning as sophomore Jen Nashalsky (Galloway/Hilliard Bradley) doubled setting the stage for Biggs who executed a sacrifice bunt that placed Nashalsky in scoring position. She later scored off an Osborne at bat which resulted in a Briton miscue, 2-0.
The scoring frenzy continued for DC as they added three runs in the third after sophomore Hali Geraci (Springboro) singled to left field scoring the final run of the inning en route to the 4-0 lead.
Defiance would tack on three more runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning led by a home run from Gostomsky that sealed the 10-0 sweep of Albion.
Biggs collected the win in the circle pitching a complete game shutout allowing just two hits.
The Purple and Gold return to action on Saturday, March 30 as they open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action with Hanover.
