DCSB Ends Post-Season Run in 5-1 Loss to Transy
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Defiance College softball team dropped a heartbreaker this afternoon, falling 5-1 in the semi-final round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. After a wash of Saturday's games due to weather, the four remaining teams, Franklin College, Mount St. Joseph University, Transylvania University and Defiance College, were all reseeded, forcing the number four Yellow Jackets to face 1st-seed Transy once again.
After a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Pioneers awoke to plate a trio of runs on as many hits, putting DC in a hole early. The Purple and Gold continued to stay silent for the next two innings before erupting with a run in the top of the fifth. Jackie Hartman garnered a hit after ripping a single to left field. Haley Patty would follow with a single through the left side that would elicit a Transylvania error, allowing Patty to advance to second and knocking in Hartman to reduce the gap to 3-1.
Transy immediately responded, racking up a pair of runs on a RBI single to left center coupled with a double to center, extending their advantage to 5-1.
Despite their effort, the Yellow Jackets would fall short of the upset, recording just one more hit through the final two innings to finish the game in a 5-1 loss.
"I'm really proud of team 37 and their accomplishments this year," said head coach Jodie Holava. "This senior class will be hard to replace, they'll always hold a special place in the history of Defiance College softball." The Yellow Jackets end their season with an overall record of 23-14 and 10-6 in HCAC play.
